Some of the most useful conversations I have are not about coursework
Why I keep an open invitation for students to talk about the things that don't fit in office hours.
Students arrive at office hours with a question about a homework problem and, twenty minutes later, ask the thing they actually came for: whether they picked the right major, whether an internship rejection means something, whether they belong here.
Making the invitation explicit
Spill the Tea started because those conversations were happening by accident. Naming it removes the need for a pretext. It is a cup of tea and an honest conversation — not counseling, and not a substitute for professional support when that is what someone needs.
