A practicum is a portfolio of projects
Multiple student teams, multiple external sponsors, real scope, real deadlines, and stakeholders who did not sign up to be patient. Scope creep, dependency risk, and stakeholder expectation management all show up on schedule.
What transfers
- Governance rhythm: checkpoints beat heroics.
- Explicit scope agreements at the start prevent most end-of-term conflict.
- Escalation paths that students can actually use.
- Treating a sponsor relationship as something to be earned each week.
The result is that students experience something closer to professional delivery than to a group assignment — and sponsors get work they can use.
