Who Wants to Be Wiser?

A game-show review format that turns exam prep into a whole-room event.

Classroom Engagement

The problem

Review sessions before an exam are usually the least engaged hour of the semester.

The idea

Borrow the pacing, tension, and lifelines of a television format and attach them to course content.

What it does

  • Runs escalating question ladders with team lifelines.
  • Keeps the whole room voting rather than one contestant answering.

How it works

  1. 1

    Ladder

Questions increase in difficulty across the round.

  2. 2

    Lifelines

Teams can poll the room or drop options.

  3. 3

    Debrief

Every miss becomes a short teaching moment.

Research connection

Classroom Engagement — attention and participation under game structure.

Design decisions

  • Everyone votes, so nobody spectates.
  • Debrief on misses keeps it a review session, not a quiz show.

Behavioral design

Salience and social play; the format makes attention the default rather than an act of will.

Classroom use

Used in review sessions across several courses.

What I learned

  • Attendance at review sessions is the clearest signal that the format works.
